1. What Unmute is (and isn't)

Unmute is a for-profit platform for publishing and supporting petitions. Petitions on Unmute are expressions of public opinion. They are not legally binding, are not affiliated with any government process, and no outcome is ever guaranteed or implied.

Unmute is not a charity, a charitable fundraising platform, or a political committee. Nothing on this platform is a solicitation of charitable donations.

2. Contributions

Signing a petition requires a contribution (minimum $1 USD). Your contribution is a payment to Unmute that supports the operation of the platform and the promotion of petitions. It is NOT a donation to any cause, person, government, or organization named in a petition, and it is not tax-deductible.

On petitions created by community members, 80% of signature contributions are credited to the petition's creator and 20% to the platform. On petitions published by Unmute itself, 100% supports the platform and its promotion campaigns.

Wallet credits: you may pre-fund a wallet (minimum $5) and spend credits on signatures. Credits are redeemable only on this platform. Unused credits do not expire and are refundable on request at their remaining balance.

Boosts are paid feed placements, always labeled as such. Boost fees are non-refundable once the boost period begins.

3. Refunds & chargebacks

Signature contributions are refundable within 14 days on request if the petition was removed for violating these terms. Unused wallet balances are refundable at any time. To request a refund, contact support with your account email.

Initiating a chargeback instead of contacting support may result in account suspension while we resolve it.

4. Creating petitions

Publishing is free. You must be 16 or older to create an account or petition, and 18 or older (or have guardian consent) to receive payouts.

You keep ownership of your petition content and grant Unmute a worldwide, non-exclusive license to display, distribute, and promote it, including in paid advertising.

You are responsible for what you publish. State opinions as opinions; do not present false statements of fact about identifiable people or businesses.

5. Prohibited content

We remove, without refund of boosts: hate or harassment targeting protected groups; calls for violence; defamation; doxxing or publishing private information; content sexualizing minors; deliberate medical or electoral disinformation; scams or impersonation; content that violates law in Canada or your jurisdiction; petitions targeting private individuals (public figures acting in their public capacity are fair game: a petition about a footballer's on-field conduct is fine; one about your neighbour is not).

We may remove any petition at our discretion and will state a reason. Removal for violation forfeits pending creator earnings from that petition.

6. Creator earnings & payouts

Creator earnings accrue as 80% of signature contributions on your petitions. Payouts are available from $25, processed through our payment partner, and require identity verification (KYC) by that partner. This is a legal requirement, not our choice.

You are responsible for your own taxes on earnings. Where legally required (e.g., US IRS 1099-K thresholds, EU DAC7, Canada reporting rules), we or our payment partner will report earnings to tax authorities.

Earnings obtained through fraud (stolen cards, self-signing loops, bot activity) are void and will be clawed back.

7. Your data & privacy

Signing a petition can reveal your opinions. That's the point of a petition, and it deserves real protection. Public display of your name alongside a petition is optional. See our Privacy Policy for the full picture, including your rights under Quebec Law 25, PIPEDA, and the GDPR.

8. Liability

Petition content is created by users and does not represent Unmute's views. The platform is provided "as is"; to the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability to you is limited to the amounts you paid us in the previous 12 months.

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Quebec and the federal laws of Canada. Nothing in these terms limits mandatory consumer rights in your jurisdiction.
